After seeing quite a few positive recommendations online, Jessa and I headed out to Cockatoo Steak and Seafood for a beef dinner. The restaurant has a lovely, fine atmosphere and the flavors were genuinely great, but the way the meal was presented left us with a few mixed feelings based on personal steak preferences.
It has been about 3 months since our visit, but if you are particular about how your steak is prepared, there are a couple of insider details you should know before you go!

The Main Course: The Beef
First things first: the meat itself tasted wonderful and was well-seasoned. However, the kitchen uses a presentation style that changes how the steak cooks:
  • Pre-cut Meat: The steak was served already sliced up on the plate. For a lot of steak enthusiasts, half the joy is cutting into a fresh steak yourself, and pre-slicing can sometimes cause the juices to escape a bit faster.
  • The Sizzling Platter: The meat is served on a piping-hot, sizzling cast-iron platter. While this looks and sounds amazing when it hits the table, it means the beef continues to cook right in front of you. Even if you order your steak medium-rare or medium, the intense residual heat from the platter will likely cook it all the way to well-done by the time you are halfway through your meal.

The Sides
We also tried the mashed potatoes alongside our meal. While the flavor was perfectly fine, they didn't quite have that distinct "homemade" texture and taste we were personally hoping for, especially given all the high praise the restaurant gets online.

The Verdict
Overall, the food at Cockatoo Steak and Seafood tastes great, and if you aren't overly picky about steak presentation, you will likely have a wonderful meal here! However, if you prefer a traditionally served steak, our best advice is to ask the staff nicely to keep your steak uncut when you order it, and see if they can serve it on a regular plate instead of a sizzling platter so it doesn't overcook.
