I always hate to be overly critical or negative about a local spot on here. If I had something genuinely positive to say, I would absolutely lead with that. But at some point, when the same patterns keep happening over multiple visits, I feel like it's only fair to share what my actual experience has been like. Yesterday, I decided to give Grinders Resto Cafe in Dumanjug one final chance, hoping for a turnaround, but unfortunately, it was more of the same.

To give them fair credit, my very first visit started out perfectly fine. I ordered a San Mig Light and their sweet and sour pork, and everything came out without a hitch. While using that specific cut of meat for a sweet and sour dish felt a bit unconventional to me, it was a perfectly decent meal.

The real challenges started on my subsequent visits, mainly down to extreme consistency issues with both their menu availability and food preparation:
  • The Disappearing Menu: On my second visit, I had my heart set on the lemon chicken. They were completely out of stock. I tried ordering a couple of other alternative dishes, but those were unavailable as well. I ended up defaulting back to the sweet and sour pork.

  • Total Recipe Inconsistency: When that second sweet and sour pork order arrived, it was unrecognizable from the first time. It featured an entirely different cut of pork, though it did actually include the pineapples and extra vegetables you would normally expect. While this version actually tasted a bit better, it was absurdly different from my first visit. For me, the hallmark of a great restaurant is consistency—when regulars find a dish they love, they expect it to taste the same every time they come back.

  • Family Dinner Outages: I later brought my wife, Jessa, and our son along for a meal. Once again, almost every single item we initially tried to select from the menu was completely out of stock. We all ended up settling for meals we weren't actually craving. My lemon chicken was finally available, but it unfortunately fell way short of expectations. Jessa ordered the buffalo wings—or at least a variation of fried chicken—and was far from impressed.

  • Turned Away for Catering: On two separate occasions, I dropped in to order a simple burger. Both times I was told they couldn't take any dine-in orders because the kitchen was entirely tied up handling a catering delivery. On one of those visits, there were about eight people inside eating a large group dinner, but the kitchen staff still felt that firing up a single burger was simply too much extra work to take on.

They are frequently closed when I drive past, but seeing the doors open yesterday afternoon, I pulled in hoping to grab something I was genuinely craving. Sure enough, I was met with the familiar, "Out of stock, Sir."
I truly wanted to love this place and find a reliable local stopover, but the persistent service and stocking issues make it incredibly tough to recommend. Have any of you managed to catch them on a good day, or experienced better luck with their menu consistency? Let me know in the replies!
