Hey there, it’s Aksel! Welcome back to another update from our life here in the mountains of the Philippines. Today is a pretty exciting day because we are finally addressing one of the biggest challenges of living up here: the road. If you’ve seen our previous videos, you know the path to our house isn't exactly a highway—it’s narrow, steep, and can get incredibly slippery when it rains. But that’s all about to change!
I just finished up my live show, and the first thing I wanted to do was show you the progress. We are on day three of construction for our brand-new road. It’s not quite finished yet, but the transformation is already visible. We’ve got a solid team of three working on it, including Jessa’s brothers and a neighbor boy who’s about 17 or 18. It’s a real family and community effort!
The old road was a bit of a disaster—lots of rocks in the middle and deep ditches on either side. If you weren't careful on a motorbike or in a car, you could easily slide right off. We’re making this new version wider and much more stable. We’re even using a special technique with a broom to make the surface rough, so it provides better grip during those heavy tropical downpours. It doesn't have to be perfect; it just needs to be safe and functional.
Of course, it wouldn't be a day at the Dahl household without some family chaos! My little boy was having the time of his life in his pool, showing off his swimming skills for the camera as soon as he noticed I was filming. Then there’s Luna, our dog, who I’m convinced is the laziest dog in the world. She’s supposed to be a guard dog, but she’d probably just hand her food over to any intruder! She’s definitely due for a shower later today.
While the boys were working hard on the road, Jessa was busy being the "Barbecue Queen." She had a massive spread going: squid, tuna, and pork. Only in the Philippines do you get that kind of combination for one dinner! I had to tease her a bit because some of the meat was looking a little... well, "well-done." It actually brought back memories of my childhood in Norway. My dad was always the one at the grill, and he had a habit of burning everything to the point where nobody wanted to come over for a barbecue! Eating Jessa’s cooking today felt just like being back home with my parents. Even Luna got a few pieces of the extra-crispy meat—she didn't seem to mind the char at all!
We’ve agreed on a set price for the road work since it’s family doing the job. I want to make sure the boys are happy and fairly compensated for their hard work. It’s a steep hill, so having a proper, paved road is going to make our lives so much easier, especially when it comes to parking the car and the motorbikes. We’re estimating another three or four days of work, depending on the weather.
Once the road is fully finished, I’m planning to do a more detailed video breaking down the costs and how it fits into our larger project and our life here in the mountains. For now, it’s just great to see things moving forward.
