Good afternoon and welcome back to VibePinas! Today, I’m showing you something that I can’t remember ever seeing happen back in Norway. We are currently in Daanbantayan, and we’ve run into a situation that is truly "only in the Philippines."
There’s a new road being built up near where we are staying, and the construction has completely stalled.
We took a walk up to the end of the construction zone—or what should be the continuation of the road—and found the culprit. It turns out this stretch of road passes through private land. The landowner obviously had an agreement with the contractors, but somewhere along the line, promises weren't kept. His response? He didn't just put up a fence or a sign. He planted a row of banana trees right in the middle of the leveled dirt road!
It’s literally a "banana road" now. Work has completely stopped, and there’s a lone construction machine just idling nearby, looking like it’s been abandoned. We talked to a neighbor who confirmed there's a big dispute going on. In Norway, this would be a legal battle involving months of paperwork; here, you just plant some crops and wait for the contractors to realize they messed up.
This "disaster of construction" means the main route is blocked. Luckily, we have a 4x4, because the alternative "road" out of here is a nightmare. It’s a narrow, muddy track that winds dangerously close to the roofs of some local houses. We’ve actually gotten stuck a couple of times on what looked like flat land just because the mud is so thick. If we didn't have the Kia with its four-wheel drive, we’d be completely trapped. I saw a small truck try to power through it, but it was bouncing around so hard I’m fairly sure it left half its bumper behind!
After inspecting the road (and the banana trees), Jessa "tricked" me into a little detour. She claimed she wanted to help me film the road project, but conveniently, we ended up right near a pizza place. She’s supposed to be making dinner tonight, but before I knew it, we were sitting there ordering pizza! Liam seemed pretty happy with the choice, even if he fell asleep shortly after.
We also spent some time today relaxing, swimming, and sending some money to Jessa's sister. It’s been one of those warm, busy-but-not-busy days. The plan for the rest of the night is simple: we’re going to head home, crawl into bed, and do absolutely zero. I’ve had enough "adventure" for one day navigating through muddy alleys and dodging banana trees in the middle of a highway.
