Welcome back! Today’s video is a bit of a special one because we are celebrating a massive local tradition: the Fiesta in Ginatilan. If you’ve never experienced a Philippine fiesta in a mountain barangay, you are in for a treat. It’s loud, it’s colorful, and it’s a perfect example of why I fell in love with the spirit of this country.
The day starts off in a way that I can only describe as "peak Jessa." We’re out in our garden in the mountains, and she has quite literally gone bananas. We have a massive harvest of saba bananas from our own land, and Jessa is in her element, processing them for the fiesta celebrations. Watching her work—moving with that boundless energy she’s known for—is a reminder of the "raw" and authentic life we’ve built here. There’s something so satisfying about eating food that you’ve grown on your own mountain, and Jessa makes sure none of it goes to waste.
But as much as the morning was about the bananas, the afternoon was all about the community. A fiesta in the Philippines isn't just a party; it’s a total "village" event. We headed down to join the festivities, and the atmosphere was electric. You have the local band playing, the streets decorated with banderitas, and every house is open, welcoming neighbors and strangers alike with a massive spread of food.
One of the things I wanted to highlight in this video is the contrast between my background in Norway and this life in Cebu. Back home, we are very private. Here, during a fiesta, the walls quite literally come down. I found myself sitting at tables with people I’ve only met a few times, sharing lechon and local delicacies. It’s a level of hospitality that still blows my mind. For a foreigner like me, being invited into these homes and treated like part of the family is the ultimate "Pinas" experience.
We also took some time to enjoy the local performances. Seeing the kids in their costumes, dancing with so much pride for their barangay, is a beautiful sight. It’s a reminder that even in a remote mountain area, the culture is incredibly rich and vibrant. I’m always humbled by how much effort goes into these celebrations, despite the challenges of provincial life.
Throughout the day, I found myself reflecting on our journey. Building a home in the Ginatilan mountains has been a long road—I've shown you the windows going in and the struggles with the "bukid" logistics in previous videos—but moments like today make it all worth it. Being part of a community that celebrates together, laughs together, and processes a mountain of bananas together is exactly what I was searching for when I left the West.
Of course, it wouldn't be a VibePinas video without a little bit of "unfiltered" fun. Whether it’s Jessa’s hilarious reactions to the harvest or my own attempts to navigate the crowded fiesta streets with a camera, I want to show you the real side of life here. It’s messy, it’s noisy, and sometimes it’s a little bit "bananas," but it’s our life.
