In this video, I wanted to take you along as Jessa, and I explore the market. We aren't just here to look; we’re here to dive into the local food scene, specifically the legendary "Balut." For those who don't know, Balut is a fertilized egg with a nearly developed embryo inside. It’s the ultimate "rite of passage" for any foreigner in the Philippines. I’ve tried a lot of things since moving here, but sitting down at a small street stall in the middle of Carbon to eat Balut is a memory I won’t forget. It’s about more than just the taste; it’s about the atmosphere—the vendors shouting, the smell of street food in the air, and the genuine curiosity of the locals watching a Norwegian man tackle their favorite snack.
Beyond the Balut, walking through Carbon is an adventure in itself. We’re navigating the tight alleys, looking at everything from fresh produce and seafood to household items and clothes. One thing I’ve learned is that Carbon is where you find the real deals. It’s where the locals shop, and the prices reflect that. I’m always amazed by the sheer variety of items you can find here. What I love about these trips is the interaction. People here are so friendly and welcoming. Even in a busy place like Carbon, there’s a sense of community. However, as Jessa reminds me (and as you see in the video), you also have to be smart. It’s a busy place, so you have to keep your belongings close and stay aware of your surroundings.
We also took some time to enjoy other street foods. From grilled meats to sweet treats, Carbon is a food lover’s paradise. For me, it’s about embracing the "Pinas" spirit—being willing to try new things, even if they seem a bit strange at first. It’s about showing that life here isn't just about the beautiful beaches or the quiet mountains; it’s about the energy of the people and the richness of the local traditions.
