Welcome back! Today’s video is a bit of a departure from our usual mountain life in Ginatilan. We’ve headed down to Cebu City, specifically to the area near J-Mall, to give you a raw and unfiltered look at a side of the Philippines that many travelers never see. We’re visiting the "squatter area" where Jessa’s sister currently lives.
For me, as someone from Norway, these environments are a massive eye-opener. It’s a dense, bustling, and often overwhelming landscape of improvised housing and narrow alleys. But while the word "squatter" might carry a negative connotation for some, being here with Jessa’s family reminds me that these are vibrant communities filled with hardworking people just trying to make a life for themselves. It’s a stark contrast to the quiet, open spaces of our mountain home, but it’s an equally important part of the Filipino story.
In this video, Jessa and I walk through the neighborhood, and you can see the sheer density of the living conditions. People are living side-by-side, sharing resources, and navigating a life that is miles away from the modern developments just a few streets over. I wanted to show this not out of pity, but to highlight the resilience of the people here. Jessa’s sister welcomed us with open arms, and despite the challenges of the environment, there is a sense of family and connection that is truly inspiring.
Being in the city like this also reinforces why Jessa and I are so committed to our project in Ginatilan. While the city offers convenience and proximity to things like J-Mall, the trade-off in terms of space, air quality, and peace is massive. Walking through these narrow paths, I can’t help but think about the "free aircon" and the mountain views waiting for us back home. It makes me even more grateful for the path we’ve chosen.
I also spent some time reflecting on the economic reality here. Many people in these areas are working multiple jobs just to get by, and yet, they still find the time to be "jolly" and welcoming to a foreigner with a camera. It’s a humbling experience. Jessa is, as always, the perfect bridge between these two worlds. Seeing her interact with her sister and the neighbors shows me how deeply rooted she is in her culture, and it makes me proud to be part of her family.
