In this video, I officially announce the launch of my new website, vibepinas.com, and explain why I created it. My primary motivation comes from the current state of online expat content about the Philippines, which I believe is largely broken and misleading.
When people research living or traveling in the Philippines, they usually encounter two extreme narratives:
- Toxic Positivity Vloggers: Creators who paint an unrealistically rosy picture, claiming everything is perfect simply to cater to audience trends, chase views, and generate ad revenue.
- Bitter Cynics: Individuals who have had bad experiences and claim that everything about the country is terrible.
Neither of these extremes tells the real story. After living here for over eight years—traveling from the northernmost to the southernmost points, renting condos, staying in luxury resorts and simple pension houses, living in mountain bamboo huts, buying vehicles, and building houses and cabins—I want to provide a grounded, balanced truth. There are real challenges like garbage management, "Philippine time," and cultural adjustments regarding family dynamics. However, as someone originally from Norway who works online, the peace, quality time with family, and freedom I experience here far outweigh the drawbacks. Living in the mountains of Ronda, Cebu, has allowed me to escape the Western "rat race" where I felt like a robot merely existing rather than living.
To bridge this gap and create a genuine, helpful space for future expats, current residents, travelers, and locals, I built VibePinas. The core aspects of the platform include:
- Exclusive & Active Membership: The site is 100% free, but membership is strictly capped at 10,000 quality members. Once full, a waitlist will open, and inactive accounts (over 30 days without activity) will be removed to make space for active contributors.
- Authenticity & Strict Moderation: Every new profile is manually reviewed. To prevent trolls, fake accounts, spam, and flame wars, all members must use a real profile photo showing their face.
